The Sojourner Truth Summer Experience enriches and educates Faubourg Lafitte youth through mentoring, field trips, and visual and performing arts over eight weeks.

During the first week, the educational nonprofit Achieve 365 began gauging where the students were in terms of their grammar and reading skills. They have spent each day introducing new topics to students, working on thoughtful self-reflection, and building upon previous lessons.

The youth took a field trip to The New Canal Lighthouse Museum and Education Center, where the students received educational lessons on the preservation of the environment, how coastal erosion and preservation affect the impact of hurricanes on our communities, and how to create the necessary barriers to prevent damage from storms and disasters.  They also traveled to Jam NOLA Museum, where the co-founder gave the students a tour of the facility and went through an expansive history lesson on the culture of New Orleans. At both stops, students participated in learning activities and received gifts.

Young Audiences of Louisiana are working with the youth on developing their creative skills through visual and theater arts.

The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation generously supported this year's Summer Experience.
