Housing Needs and Solutions for Justice - Involved Women

In recent years, women's incarceration has grown at twice the pace of men's incarceration, with a disproportionate concentration in local jails. Despite this increase, few resources have been directed to meet the needs of justice-involved women. The disinvestment is especially troubling when 80% of women in prisons are mothers and often the primary caretakers of their children—dynamics which make children and communities particularly susceptible to the domino effect of burdens placed on justice-involved women.

The need for encompassing services and adequate housing for justice-impacted women is even more critical in the wake of COVID-19, which has led to NYC reducing the jail population to flatten the curve.
