BALTIMORE, Md. - Enterprise Community Development, the country’s fifth largest nonprofit affordable housing developer, is pleased to announce the recent addition of two new leaders to its senior leadership team. Ben Hyman began earlier this month as the organization’s new senior operations manager, and Nii Sowah will step into the role of vice president of Community Impact Strategies in early September.
“Both of these positions represent key pillars in the organizational success of our growing company,” said Enterprise Community Development President & CEO Brian McLaughlin. “Their talent and expertise will push our reach and impact in response to the realities of this moment.”
As senior operations manager, Hyman serves as an indispensable partner to the CEO and other Enterprise Community Development organizational leaders. He is responsible for aligning mission and goals while serving as a thought and execution lead on issues of organizational strategy and operations. Hyman will oversee critical projects and priorities for the organization.
Prior to joining Enterprise Community Development, Hyman served as the director of special projects for the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore. In that role, he was responsible for leading the redevelopment efforts of Rash Field Park at the Inner Harbor. Before that, Hyman served as the executive director of Pigtown Main Street, a community development nonprofit in Southwest Baltimore. He also served on the Baltimore City Council under Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young. Hyman has an extensive background leading and navigating organizational and operational complexity across multiple business lines. He holds a bachelor’s degree in geography from The George Washington University and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
As vice president of Community Impact Strategies, Sowah will engage strategic stakeholders who provide services designed to enhance, enrich and improve quality of life at Enterprise communities. His efforts will focus on the organization’s four core impact areas: child and youth development, economic security and mobility, aging in community, and health and wellness.
Prior to joining Enterprise, Sowah served as assistant commissioner of community services for Baltimore’s Department of Housing and Community Development where he oversaw operations for the city’s head start programs, childcare academies and its office of homeless services. In addition, he served as the director of the Family Stability & Economic Success programs at the Center for Urban Families dedicated to accelerating social and economic opportunity, as well as advocating for policies that promote equity and racial justice.
Sowah has a broad spectrum of experience, including time as the work programs administrator with Maryland State Department of Social Services’ Office of Work Opportunities in Baltimore where he led teams that supported efforts to boost employment rates and earnings for low- and moderate-income residents. He further demonstrated his passion for community advocacy as the director of Youth and Family Services and co-director of operations at Bon Secours Community Works where he led a team of 25 direct service members supporting initiatives aimed at early childhood education, family preservation, youth and young adult services, parenting, career development and financial services. Sowah holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Morgan State University and an MPA from the University of Baltimore.
Along with having been named one of the country’s largest nonprofit affordable housing developers by virtue of housing portfolio size, Enterprise Community Development continues to grow capacity through key staff additions like those of Hyman and Sowah. Since January, Enterprise Community Development has added more than 40 new staff members and grown by 11 percent.
