In April, nine Tribes from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin came together in Oneida, Wisconsin, for our Enhancing and Implementing Homeownership Programs in Native Communities training.

Led by Enterprise Program Officer Jeremiah Powless, the three-day convening provided the opportunity for Tribal teams to examine what makes homeownership programs successful—evaluating existing assets, identifying gaps, and mapping out next steps tailored to their communities.
We’re grateful to Lanalle Smith of Blacksheet Consulting and our event sponsors—Baker Tilly, Bay Bank, and Wisconsin Indigenous Housing and Economic Development Corporation—for their support.
The training is grounded in a 12-module curriculum developed by Enterprise in partnership with Seven Sisters Community Development Group, with generous support from Freddie Mac.
Designed for Tribes, Tribally Designated Housing Entities (TDHEs), and Tribal Housing Authorities (THAs), the curriculum helps strengthen their capacity to offer culturally relevant, sustainable pathways to homeownership.
Topics include:
- Navigating land issues
- Assessing Tribal members’ needs
- Homebuyer programs & services
- Lending processes and loan products to Optimize Homeownership
- Home design and construction: making the right choices
